AbstractIf humans have evolved -as proved by a vast wealth of multi disciplinary research- the capacity to cooperate and to take action in favor of the environment, why are we still seeing patterns of environmental degradation that threaten the very existence of humans on earth? The behavioral revolution had a major impact in the economics discipline and the understanding of environmental challenges is no exception. Major applications of behavioral insights have contributed to understand how humans respond to ecological challenges but also how they create them. Loss aversion, present bias, prosocial preferences, reciprocity and cooperation are examples of applications of behavioral insights that have revolutionized how economics addresses environmental problems. This talk will discuss a few gaps and paradoxes regarding our understanding of human behavior and the environment, and will highlight some of the current debates in behavioral sciences and how we can contribute in developing better theories, insights and policy recommendations.
